PXI is still amazing, but there are modern alternatives

PXI has earned its place in automated test.

For high-performance measurement, synchronization and modular instrumentation, PXI remains a powerful architecture. It offers speed, precision, timing and a broad ecosystem of modules. In many demanding applications, PXI is still the right choice.

But not every functional test system needs a full PXI setup.

Many production testers require practical combinations of measurement, I/O, switching, communication and power. The challenge is often not achieving the absolute highest performance. The challenge is building a reliable tester quickly, keeping it compact, reducing wiring, controlling cost and making it easier to maintain over time.

That is where modern in-fixture instrumentation becomes interesting.

Instead of placing all instrumentation in a rack or chassis outside the fixture, compact modules can be mounted inside the test fixture itself. This can reduce space requirements, simplify cabling and bring instrumentation closer to the device under test.

Testblox is not positioned as a replacement for every PXI system. It is better understood as a modern complement to existing test architectures. The overview material compares Testblox with rack instruments, PXI, Ethernet-based modular instrumentation and custom in-fixture instrumentation, emphasizing its small size, COTS hardware approach and fit inside standard functional test fixtures.

PXI is still amazing.

But for many functional test applications, there may now be a smaller, simpler and more cost-efficient way to build.
